What Exactly is the Endocannabinoid System?

A few years back, Israeli researcher Dr. Raphael Mechoulam discovered a 12th biological system in the body that was named the Endocannabinoid system. The job of the ECS is balance and homeostasis. It regulates nearly every function of the body including appetite, pain, sleep, immunity, and more.  It is composed of specific receptors found throughout the entire human body and it is more important than we ever imagined.

Every cell in the body contains receptors that bind to specific chemicals created just for them. The endocannabinoid system also has these receptors. Studied by scientists only within the past three decades, this previously unknown system consists of a regulatory network that is so vast it even outnumbers the body’s neurotransmitters. This is how vital it is to human life.

The endocannabinoid system, or ECS, is present in all mammals and certain reptiles, fish, and birds. It is even present in sea urchins. Comprised of two receptors— CB1 and CB2–it is thought to have evolved millions of years ago. Each receptor works differently but they are activated by both THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol). 

Cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol are natural cannabinoids which originate from the marijuana plant as well as the hemp plant. These two chemicals have been found to have properties that are capable of balancing the ECS. The main difference is that THC has psychoactive properties that are responsible for the high that people feel when they use it.  CBD, on the other hand, is non-psychoactive and will not affect the user in the same way. This makes it an attractive alternative to medical marijuana.

How Important Is the ECS?

The receptors of the ECS  and our own endogenous cannabinoids are found throughout the human body and are present in every major organ, including our skin. These cannabinoids bind to their corresponding receptors. CB1 receptors are most plentiful in our central nervous system, and CB2 receptors are found in the immune system. When these receptors are stimulated, they produce a number of effects. Mood, appetite, pain, sleep, temperature, memory, inflammation, and emotion are just a few functions regulated by the ECS. It overarches all of the other body systems combined.  Without this miraculous network of communication, we would not be able to live.

What Is the Difference Between an Endocannabinoid and CBD?


 Endocannabinoids refer to cannabinoids which are naturally created in our own bodies.  They are responsible for maintaining homeostasis within the cells.  CBD is a plant cannabinoid called a phytocannabinoid.  It is nearly identical to an endocannabinoid and can work within the body to restore balance when our ECS system isn’t functioning correctly.

What Happens If There Is a Problem With the Endocannabinoid System?

 The endocannabinoid system regulates so much of our physiology that when there is an imbalance many things can go wrong.  Our bodies begin to develop symptoms that we treat with pharmaceuticals that cause more symptoms that we treat with even more medicines. Before long, our entire system is out of whack.  Some researchers believe this happens as a result of an endocannabinoid deficiency.  Poor diet, pollutants, stress, environment, and other factors can all account for an endocannabinoid deficiency.

It is theorized that an EC deficiency has wide-ranging manifestations in conditions like fibromyalgia, chronic pain, inflammation, irritable bowel syndrome, migraines, anxiety,  and a host of other maladies. Our bodies other systems begin to break down, and this causes disease.
